Clomark has been meeting changing customer needs by bringing fresh, added value to brand owners for 47 years. This is thanks to a dynamic management team that thrives on technically challenging and intricate work and supports continuous strategic capital investments in leading global converting technologies, writes Nici Solomon.
CLOMARK’S Midrand-based operation has evolved beyond producing self-adhesive labels into a convenient manufacturing operation for brand owners’ packaging needs – offering shrink sleeves; shipper and closure cartons; and film conversion for sachets, wrappers and other printed laminate applications. MD Shyam Chirkoot emphasises that while the company has experienced significant growth, it has been very careful not to compromise on delivering quality and versatility – such as in-house finishing services, including embossing, hot and cold foiling and shrink sleeve conversion – at faster than average industry lead times in sub-Saharan Africa. Shyam adds that the management team’s sound and in-depth technical knowledge base of packaging development and manufacturing, is driven by an extreme sense of urgency and thriving on sophisticated and specialised work with more complex materials. ‘Being highly-motivated and supported by an in-house laboratory as well as plastic forming technology makes the product development process much easier,’ he states. ‘Additionally, we can offer brand owners design and DTP services, as well as approvals for their entire packaging range (cartons, labels and shrink sleeves) in one sitting. Only having to deal with one converter, enables customers to save on costs, and improves accountability. This particularly facilitates the maintenance of quality and colour consistency across a new range of products.’ Operations manager, Dhiraj Chirkoot reveals that Clomark has converted many customers from selfadhesive labels to shrink sleeves as the technology’s growth potential has blossomed in the South African market. ‘Many brand owners are still shying away from shrink sleeve technology because they don’t know enough about it. Our team, therefore, offers customer education and technical guidance in terms of choosing the right equipment and optimising the converting processes.’ This service demonstrates Clomark’s ability to add value to customers’ businesses and the team’s openness to constant adjustments in the packaging market.
Brand owners’ acknowledge these benefits. Clicks’ packaging technologist, Quinton Jonathan, says: In our business, we must get our products to the stores according to a regular schedule. We rely on dependable service providers like Clomark to help us keep on schedule and satisfy our customers. Clomark’s labels are reaching the US and European markets. Kay Garston, a designer with Clutton (UK), says the Clomark team is professional, knowledgeable and reliable. Clomark’s latest machinery investment is a high-tech Stanford sleeve conversion seamer – supplied by Rotocon – with advanced perforation, layflat monitoring and precise solvent control. Clomark manufactures highly-decorative shrink sleeves for cosmetic, pharmaceutical and nutritional supplement products reaching the sub-Saharan Africa, US and European markets. The shrink sleeves can be cold foiled and perforated vertically or horizontally to meet tamper evidence requirements.
responsiveness and the way it conducts business. We have, therefore, recommended the company to others.’ National sales manager, Jocelyn Munsami, elaborates: ‘Smart packaging design helps in differentiating products from a competitor’s and widely serves as a marketing refreshing technique for brand owners. Innovative packaging technologies can also make production easier and more attractive, and often offer improved consumer convenience. Clomark’s technical, dynamic and creative team, therefore, ensures customer satisfaction in excellent turnaround times.’ Craig Kaminsky, director of FitChef agrees withnh these sentiments. ‘At FitChef our packaging appeal is as important as our innovative meal solutions.

Clomark is able to meet FitChef’s diverse packaging needs by providing the cartons, labels, sachets and shrink sleeves for its product ranges.
Our brand is growing incredibly quickly, which means that FitChef needs the best of everything … a team that provides great quality, great service, and great pricing, and Clomark does all of this for us!’ Diego de Radigues, director and brand owner of Bakali Foodstuffs, adds: ‘We have a very efficient working relationship with Clomark. Firstly, Clomark’s quality enables us to offer our customers an attractive, competitive healthy snacking solution. We very often receive compliments about the products’ freshness and this is thanks to having the right packaging partner. Secondly, the company’s service delivery is excellent – key if one wants to be successful – its lead times are probably one of the best in the market. Furthermore, the team’s response rate and availability is excellent as is its knowledge of each of our products. ‘I would not recommend them to anyone, as I would be jealous of sharing this amazing jewel I have
discovered,’ he quips. Shyam Chirkoot comments: ‘In this fast-paced digital age, Clomark continually needs to maintain its identity and appeal to brand owners and, ultimately, the discerning consumer. Our team seems to get this right by adopting a fresh perspective to the fast moving consumer goods market.’
